Charlie looked even more surprised, “You got hitched to someone else?”

Estelle gave an awkward chuckle, “It's not my kid. It’’s my friend’s kid.”

Her expression was complex, her grip around Kya tightened.

Emily didn’t want Charlie to know about Kya, so Estelle definitely couldn't say it either.

She never thought she would run into Charlie here, of all places.

Charlie let out a visible sigh of relief, looking at the little girl's face, he felt a strange familiarity, “What a cute little doll, what's her name?”

“Kya.” Estelle answered, then turned to Kya and said, “This is Charlie.”

Kya had been watching Charlie, suddenly she reached out with her tiny hands, “Give me a hug!”

Estelle was taken aback.

Kya was usually skittish around strange adult men, always dodging them when they're out, but here she was asking to be held by Charlie. Estelle was taken by surprise. Was this some kind of father-daughter telepathy?

Charlie looked surprised too, then stretched out his arms to hold Kya.

Kya nestled against his shoulder, arms wrapped around his neck, even kicking her legs in delight.

Charlie seemed a bit out of his depth, probably his first time holding a child this small. He laughed, “She's quite the brave one.”

Estelle was lost for words, she just gave an awkward smile.

Charlie asked, “Where are you two heading? I can give you a lift.”

Estelle replied, “No need, I'll just grab a cab.” As she reached out to hold Kya, “Kya, time to go home.”
