He wouldn't help her like he used to. From that day on, they were strangers.
The girl was still begging, but the woman didn't want to budge at all. Some onlookers gathered around them, taking the girl’s side after they understood what was going on, trying to persuade the woman to accept the cake.
The woman finally relented but threw Emily a curveball: "It's your fault it's late; the cake's not fresh anymore. If you want to compensate me, you can give me back half the money!"
Emily's eyes widened, shaking her head, "I can't afford that."
The cake cost two thousand bucks, so half of that would be a thousand bucks.
"Either pay up or take the cake away, it's up to you!" The woman crossed her arms, turning away to ignore Emily.
The people around them were discussing the situation, and it was pretty obvious that the woman on the couch just wanted Emily to pay her.
Charlie watched with an impassive expression. Seeing Emily in such a miserable state didn't make him feel any better, but rather made him hate her more!
He hated her for betraying him for a mere 500,000, for her greed and shortsightedness!
He suddenly realized that Emily was indeed very money-hungry, working several jobs and eating bread for three days straight just to save money. Since they met, he'd never seen her buy any new clothes.
And now, for the sake of a cake, she's almost about to kneel before that woman!
Indeed, they were never meant to be together!
"Emily!"
Estelle came downstairs, asking, "What's going on?"
Seeing Estelle, Emily was a bit surprised and quickly shook her head, "Nothing, I came to deliver the cake."
