When Ian climbed back into bed, Maja was in that half-asleep, half-awake zone.

His arm was still wrapped around her waist.

He turned towards her, taking a good look at her face.

She had a nice nose and great skin, and though her lashes weren't long, they were thick. Even with her short hair, she still looked cute while sleeping.

He couldn't resist, hugging her tight and planting a little kiss on her like he was petting a lazy cat.

His action stirred Maja awake. She looked at him, and suddenly a smile spread across her face.

"It must be fake," she said.

She was talking about the letter she had seen that day. After all, he was right beside her.

Maja was dreaming, and after saying that, she drifted back to sleep.

But her smile got to Ian; it felt like a punch to his heart, a mix of sweet and sour.

"What's fake?" he asked.

Maja, half-asleep, opened her eyes with a soft voice.

"You," she said.

The way she said it lingered, it felt like it seeped into Ian's bones.

He started to wonder if maybe she did have feelings for him.

He thought back to Tyler's analysis, and to be fair, many of her actions did not add up.

She was married, yet she would apply medicine for him and blush when he was on top of her.

She even sneakily drew him and often stared at him in a daze.

If it wasn't that she liked him, then what? Could there be other reasons why she won't admit it?

This was the first time Ian deeply pondered the dynamics between men and women.

He never felt this way about Carlene. He just thought it was right to be nice to her.

Ian had always been smart; in everything he did, he excelled.

His older brother, Eric Raymond, was the same. But Ian was more introverted and had diverse interests—one moment wanting to study finance, then painting, then joining the military.
