The very thought of fruit was the furthest thing from his mind. All he could think about was the overwhelming urge to see his daughter.

But before he could even respond, a thunderous explosion ripped through the air.

He stiffened, jolting upright from his seat.

"Hello?"

But there was no reply from the other end, the signal seemingly sliced clean through.

Augus bolted back to his car and sped towards the source of the call, following the signal that had led his daughter to reach out to him. It didn't take long before the scene of the accident came into view.

Onlookers had already gathered, with reporters swarming the scene.

Two cars had collided, flames leaping high into the sky, making it impossible to discern the condition of the occupants.

Augus felt as though he had been struck by lightning, his mind in a fog as he got out of the car. His gaze fell to the ground, where a photograph lay at his feet.

The woman in the photo, the one he had been searching for so long, was smiling, but it was a smile that seemed forced, a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. Behind her was an unfamiliar backdrop he had never seen.

His heart felt like it had been hit by a stray bullet, his pupils constricting sharply.

This was the woman he loved.

This was her in the photograph.

He clenched the photo in his fist and made to run towards the blazing wreckage, but a crowd of people blocked his path, and then, a second explosion rocked the vehicles.

The cheerful voice of his daughter echoed in his mind.

"Dad, what kind of fruit do you want?"

"I didn't want to come back, but I missed you."

"I'm on my way to see you."

As the flames engulfed the sky, something inside Augus seemed to puncture his soul, leaving him feeling utterly drained.

He opened his mouth to speak, but words failed him.

After a long moment, he shakily took out his phone and dialed Dr. Herrington's number.

"Dr. Herrington, my daughter, she’s dead."
