The whole situation felt like a game of blackjack where Ian had been dealt a handful of wild cards. Just when he thought he had a winning hand, the dealer threw in another twist that scrambled everything up again.
"Tyler, I'm texting you the address now. Keep your eyes peeled for tails, I need to get the full scoop on your recent investigations."
Tyler agreed instantly. The thought of catching up with Ian was something he couldn't pass up.
When Ian had gone off the grid, Tyler was in the dark about the details. Next thing he knew, Ian had spirited Eric out of the country.
Tyler checked his six for any followers before heading to Ian's location. Halfway there, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched, so he ditched the car for a chopper.
Taking a route through the mountains inaccessible by car, Tyler figured anyone on his tail would have to take to the skies, which would make them as conspicuous as a Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon.
An hour later, Tyler found Ian beneath the towering presence of the steamboat. Greenfield was in the thick of fall, with yellow leaves cascading down like confetti.
Tyler had never seen Ian like this, nor had he ever imagined that their band of friends would be torn apart by life and death.
"Ian."
No sooner had he uttered the name than sirens wailed, ripping through the quiet like a chainsaw through pumpkin pie.
Tyler's heart skipped a beat, and Ian's brow furrowed in concern.
Tyler paled. He'd been careful to the point of paranoia. How had they caught the attention of the higher-ups?
He wanted to tell Ian to run, but where could one escape with such a dragnet closing in?
Before he could act, a pair of handcuffs clicked around Tyler's wrists.
Consorting with a fugitive and keeping mum about it was grounds for arrest. Tyler had to face the music.
"Ian, get out of here!"
That was the last thing Tyler could say before realizing Ian hadn't budged.
It dawned on Tyler then—if he hadn't shown up, Ian might've had a shot at escaping. But with his friend implicated, if Ian ran now, what would that make him?
