Shouldn't Have Kissed You novel Chapter 39

Maya walked inside her office and it was filled with flowers. All types and every colour that there was in this would. This all happened every year and on this date. At least it a way of her patient to thank her and wish her a happy life that she only seems to get around her two best friends and her husband who is on and off at times.

God, she could get used to their relationship being like that. At times fighting over nothing or something which makes him end up calling her all sorts of names. Yeah, he did that when he was mad at but at times it seemed like he was more mad at himself than he was with her.

Take for instance, few days ago. The day he found her in a compromising position with Leonel. He called a whore which of course mad her mad and you all know what happen. But when she came back and found her dear husband all drunk like he had never drunk before, she knew it.

She knew he was more hurt than she was. He just acted on the heated moment something that her brother warned her never to do while they're still you. It just makes thing worse and it was true. Chris had made things worse that day but not for her but for him.

Anyway, when he got up that night with a hangover, Maya made him the only thing she knew to make in this world. That was her coffee. Of course another lesson from her dear brother to whom every time of the year and on this date, she wished he would show up at her door step. It didn't matter which door step, either hospital or home but she just kept on wishing.

And last night, she did in the midnight. Yes, maybe her wish would come true this time and that's why she asked Chris to sit with her in the garden till midnight so she could make that one wish. That one wish that would make her life whole again.

Maya moved to her seat and pulled it. Her office was smelling a garden of flowers and she like it very much. She had taken all the cards from the flowers and now she wanted to read them. They all were happy wishes and a thank you for what she has done to all the families out there.

This made her to think of her relationship Chris. When he had drunk that coffee, he had asked her to forgive him and she did. She did because when she left, she thought of herself in the same shoes as him. What if she had found him with Kimberly on that bed? With him having nothing but a towel. She would have reacted the same way as he did. That's why she chose to forgive.

They had gone downstairs to have their meal and at first, it was awkward. Awkward because she need to ask him something. Something till now she hasn't asked him cause she doesn't know how to do it. How can she.

Then there was that happy moment for them. The one that she felt like they're the only two of them who were that happy when she was with him. They would play piano in the music room and Chris would make sure that he hit the wrong rhythm when they're serious.

And those garden moments, they were her best moments and she was getting used to it. Like for the past few day, they would have dinner and she would make both of them coffee then settle in the garden. Who does that anyway, and in the night? Apparently, it was her and her dear husband.

Maya smiled when she remembered last night. It was amazing. It was the best that left her wondering why she hadn't met Chris years ago. And what made it the best was things that seem stupid to everyone. Maya's smile grew broader and the memories flowed on her. This time Kyle wasn't the first one to wish her a happy Birthday. It was Chris.

Yes, Chris. Her temper husband. Her once upon a time sworn mortal enemy. And her now soon to be best friend. Yeah, she had changed about making him officially her best friend but now, now she wanted him to be her best buddy...

"Happy happy Birthday." That was what stopped her from going into details about what took place last night. "You're really getting old there." Leonel went on.

Maya got on feet and walked around her desk. The smile she had today wasn't about to leave her face. And it's all thank to Chris. He made her count stars last night. He even confused her as she counted on them and she had to start a fresh again.

Enough about Chris, Maya.

But how could she nothing of him. He even had her promise that she would be making his coffee every morning since he was addicted. Actually, more than addicted. That's what he said to her. His words and not hers. But they felt like they had a hidden meaning to her. Or maybe she hoped they had, right?

"Leo." She called pulling him into an hug. "Thank you for the sweet words you sent to me last night." Maya pulled away from him. "You should really become a poetry."

Leonel laughed at her attempts to be funny. She knew she was poor at that but it didn't matter. As she said, nothing would wipe that smile off her face today. Thanks to Chris.

Chris. Once they were done with the stars, he told her stupid proverbs that made her laugh hard. They even played knock knock as if they're three years old. And when it reached five seconds to her birthday, he damn counted them as if it a Happy New welcome. And on the midnight, he wishes her a Happy Birthday.

Guess what even surprised her? Yes, Chris freaking Rollins sung for her an original Happy Birthday song. Maya was all tears as Chris played a fake guitar and a times a fake piano. Chris made her cry and for the first time, they're happy tears. Happy tears because of Chris.

Who would have ever thought of that? Because definitely, it wasn't Maya.

"I'm really honoured, love." Leonel said bowing down. "Does that mean that I was the first one to wish you good wishes?"

Maya smiled at him.

"You wish. Chris bit you into it."

"Ooh! But I promise next year I'll be the first one. And there will be a candle light dinner in the midnight of that same day."

Maya just laughed at him. She didn't need that. All she wanted was for her to be with someone who loved her. Someone who would do stupid things with her like Chris did. That all she wanted for a happy life. Not money.

Once Chris was done singing, she got up and walked to him. She hugged him as if her life depended on it and let the tears flow more freely. When they broke free from the hug, Chris took her hands into his and said happy Birthday to her for what seemed like a million times after midnight.

Chris moved his hand to her face to wipe away her tears as she thanked him and his touch made her to lean in for more. She didn't want it to get away from her face. And as if reading her mind, Chris moved the other free hand around her waist and pulled her closer to him. Their were no space between them and their eyes just locked. Chris' eyes moved to her lips and so did hers.

And when they leaned in to an extent that their lips were brushing each other, her phone rung.

"But I'm happy that you read and loved the message that I send to you."

She did. That was after Kyle had called her to wish her well. Kyle actually thought that she was the first one but she was happy for Maya when she learned that someone this time bit her to it. After they're done, Maya and Chris walked back to the mansion were they headed to the bedroom. On which on their arrival, Chris walked to the bathroom and she went to pick her night gown from the bag.

That's when Leonel sent her the message. She replied a thank you to him and when she thought of typing something else, Chris called to ask for shampoo. He said he didn't see it and he was all dressed so she had to go and pick it up since she was the last one to use it.

So Maya walked to the bathroom and looked where they kept the shampoo. It wasn't their, she looked around and she saw it where the shower was. Maya walked over there to pick it up but the water run over her.

When she jumped, Chris just laughed and he walked to her and held her under the shower. His other way of wishing her well. Maya struggled but the more she did, the more his hold on her became more firm...

"It's your birthday and you're talking less and smiling more." Leonel cut in through her thoughts. "Did something happen that I'm missing?"

"No..."

"Dr. Maya Rollins, you're needed at the ER." A nurse walked in interrupting Maya.

"Duty call, see you later, Leonel." Maya said walking out to follow the nurse that had walked in her office. It was still in the morning and they already had emergency so far.

Maya walked to the surgeon preparation room and put on her clothe. She washed her hands and put on her gloves along with her mask before walking to the ER. In there, she found a three nurse and one surgeon whom she had never worked with since he came to this hospital one month ago.

"What's the status?" She asked as she picked up a chart from one of the nurses.

"She was shot three times and she is loosing allot of blood." The doctor answered. "Two bullets are on her left rib and the third is on her right shoulder."

"Let's get to work them. We've to remove the bullets before she looses more blood than she already has done."

First, the removed the one from the patient's should and moved to the ones at the ribs. The bullets had really hit her bag but they had to do their best to save the woman who seemed to just be around twenty.

"We're loosing her." One of the nurses said.

Maya looked at the machine that was now beginning to show flat lines. "Her heart beats are dying down. Please pump her chest. She is loosing breath." The other doctor did as instructed and Maya looked at the machine.

The lines were completely flat now. Maya took over and placed her hands on the patient's check to pump her. She was about to ask for clear when the lines began to work again. Maya breathed a breath of relief and looked at the others.

"We need to get the remaining bullet out."

"But that's impossible." the surgeon answered. "It's buried deep in her body and we almost lost her."

"That's why we need to think before we loose her for good." Maya looked at him. "Any suggestions?"

The surgeon thought for a while before he suggested they open her up in between the ribs where the bullet was and so they did. Once all the bullets were out, Maya stitched her patient and asked for her to be moved to a room.

She walked to the changing room where she washed her hands. The surgeon congratulated her and wished her a happy Birthday before they walked out of the room.

"What's going on at the main hall?" Maya asked when she got at the reception.

"I heard that there is a party."
