However, at the next second, Alex pulled his hand back and the shadows before Candice’s eyes disappeared. 

She subtly frowned. 

Alex sneered. “You really think I want to sleep with you?” 

Candice’s eyelids froze for a moment. She took a deep breath and opened her eyes. 

“Then what do you want to do?” she asked. 

There was only a night lamp in the room, creating a dim environment that veiled Alex’s expression. 

All she could hear him saying was, “Sleep.” 

“This is my room,” she said calmly. “You can book a room yourself.” 

“It’s troublesome.” 

Candice turned away from him and closed her eyes. 

She was a light sleeper. The softest noise could wake her up. 

At midnight, Alex’s phone suddenly rang. The electronic melody sounded irritatingly sharp. 

Candice woke up with furrowed brows. She saw Alex talking on the phone, and since they were on the same bed, she could also hear 

Sonia’s cry. 

“Alex, where are you? Can you come to the hospital right now? My dad got into a car crash and he’s in the emergency room. I’m scared.” 

Candice instinctively looked at Alex. 

He frowned and said heavily. “I’m on my 

my way.” 

As soon as he hung up the phone, he bolted up while pinching the center of his brows. 

While he got changed, he said, “Book me a ticket back to Dorrington.” 

Candice did not reply immediately and only spoke after a while. “We have a contract to sign tomorrow.” 

The contract was important to Aether. She opened her eyes and said. “You can transfer some money to her first and go back tomorrow after we sign the contract.” 

Alex paused for a moment as he put on his shirt. He looked at her with narrowed eyes and said, “I don’t want to repeat myself.” 

He was obviously angry. 

Candice pinched the blanket tightly and asked, “So you’re serious about her?” 

She had never seen Alex care so much about a person, not even toward herself. She did not even dare to wake him up in the middle of the night. 

Alex had a quick temper, and things would only get worse if he were to be woken suddenly. 

He stared at her with a deep gaze and said sterly, “Since when did I say I was not serious about her?” 

He was right, it had been Candice’s assumption all along. 

She thought Sonia was similar to Alex’s past flings, who he got bored of after a month. 

After Alex left, Candice stayed awake. She got herself a cup of warm milk and stood by the balcony. 

Her head was replaying the words he said to her just now. 

“Candice, you really are a turn–off. Stop assuming things between us.” 

Candice was only eighteen when she started being with Alex. Similar to Sonia, she used to be a cheerful and happy girl who also liked to

Candice held the rail tightly. A hint of conflict flashed across her eyes. She had no idea if she was still useful to Alex. 

The next day, the client was furious because of Alex’s absence. 

Candice was scolded for an hour before she managed to persuade the client to sign the contract. 

When she returned to Dorrington, it was already five in the evening. 

Candice’s car was at the airport’s parking lot. As soon as she landed, she drove to the city hospital. 

Behind the city hospital was an affiliated nursing home, where Candice’s grandfather lived. 

She was raised by her grandfather alone. Her parents divorced when she was young and started their respective families. 

She barely saw them once or twice in a year. 

Candice’s grandfather met with a car accident back then. In addition to his aging body, he had been living at the nursing home for years

Sonia looked pale and tired with dark circles under her eyes.
